Day at the Beach with Your New Baby

As a seasoned mother and the owner of Nova Newborn in Fairfax, VA, I understand the joys and challenges of taking kids to the ocean. Ensuring a fun and safe experience is always a top priority. My daughter Veronika and I have cherished many beach trips, but this was our first one with baby Andrew. Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about keeping kids safe in the water.

One of the most important lessons I've learned is the value of constant supervision. It’s crucial to stay within arm’s reach of babies and young children at all times. Distractions like phone calls or reading can wait; nothing is more important than keeping an eye on the little ones. We also make it a point to swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards, following all posted signs and warnings.

I’ve found that enrolling Veronika in swimming lessons has been invaluable, and I plan to do the same for Andrew when he is ready. Starting at age one, swimming lessons help build confidence and skills in the water. However, even the best swimmers should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets when playing in or near open water.

Understanding ocean conditions is also key. I always check the local beach report for information on currents, tides, and waves. Teaching kids about the dangers of rip currents and how to escape them by swimming parallel to the shore has become a vital part of our beach preparation.

Sun protection is another important aspect. We use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply it every two hours or after swimming. Hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing are also part of our beach gear to shield Veronika and Andrew from the sun.

At Nova Newborn, we provide birth and postpartum doula services in the DMV area. Currently, we're enjoying a family vacation in Ocean City. Safety and well-being are at the heart of everything we do, whether it's a day at the beach with your baby or supporting families through pregnancy and beyond. By prioritizing safety, we ensure that every ocean adventure is filled with joy and peace of mind.
