Overcoming Mental Blocks for a Relaxing Labor: A First-Time Mom's Journey
Labor can be an intense and transformative experience, particularly for first-time moms. Mental blocks, often arising from unmet expectations or unforeseen changes, can significantly impact the ability to relax during labor. This story highlights the journey of Emily, a first-time mom, who faced such challenges and overcame them with the support of her doula, Anna Isaiko, a DONA-certified doula working in Inova Fairfax.
Emily's Background
Emily got married and expected her first baby at the age of 35. As a pescatarian on a restricted diet, she led a health-conscious lifestyle. Unaware of her pregnancy initially, Emily undertook a long hike in Machu Picchu with her husband and participated in cleansing rituals with a shaman. Fortunately, her pregnancy progressed well, and she decided to hire a doula to pursue a natural birth.
The Birth Plan
Emily's dream was to go into labor naturally. Her midwife supported this plan, even if it meant waiting past 40 weeks. At one point, the baby was measuring in the 8th percentile but improved to the 25th percentile, alleviating major concerns. With a few weeks to go, Emily scheduled a visit to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist for added reassurance.
Unexpected Complications
During the MFM visit, the doctor discovered that Emily's amniotic fluid levels were rapidly decreasing, and the baby was measuring small again. Her midwife found that there was almost no amniotic fluid in one pocket near the baby’s head and recommended induction to mitigate risks associated with prolonged pregnancy.
Facing the Reality
Emily was deeply upset by this news. Although she understood the risks and benefits, the idea of induction was far from her ideal birth plan. She immediately called her doula, Anna Isaiko, to discuss the situation. They talked about how waiting longer could increase risks for the baby and limit the flexibility for a natural birth.
The Decision Process
Emily’s midwife suggested she could wait until Monday for induction but warned that this might reduce her chances of natural labor if the situation worsened. Emily, her husband, and Anna sat down to discuss all options in detail. Anna provided emotional support and reassured Emily that a light induction did not rule out a natural vaginal birth.
Induction and Early Labor
The next day, Emily underwent a membrane sweep, a natural method of induction. This procedure, often leading to the onset of labor, was well-tolerated by Emily. By Friday, she began experiencing light contractions while packing her hospital bags. She continued with her chiropractor visits and Webster technique, which helped her feel great.
Labor Progression
Upon arriving at the hospital, Emily’s labor intensified. She found the baby monitor belts and strong pain in her lower belly uncomfortable. They requested a portable monitor, but the provider insisted on precise monitoring due to the lack of amniotic fluid. When the midwife performed a vaginal exam, Emily was only 1 cm dilated but fully effaced. Despite her body’s efforts, Emily felt overwhelmed and shaky.
Overcoming Mental Blocks
Emily's disappointment and overwhelm stemmed from the deviation from her natural labor plan. Anna discussed these feelings with her, helping her understand that resisting her body’s process could hinder progress. Anna emphasized that Emily was doing a great job and that allowing her body to work its magic was crucial, even if it wasn’t the ideal natural onset she had hoped for.
The Outcome
With this reassurance, Emily decided to embrace the induction process and let her body lead the way. She responded well to the minimal interventions and went into labor naturally later that evening. Emily’s baby was born vaginally, without further medical intervention, resulting in a beautiful and fulfilling birth experience.
Emily’s journey underscores the importance of emotional support and flexibility during labor.
