Preparing for Andrew's First Swim: A Summer Adventure

As the summer sun begins to shine, we’re filled with excitement for a new milestone in Andrew’s life—his first swim! Over the past few months, we’ve enjoyed countless fun-filled moments with Andrew splashing around in the bathtub. It’s been delightful watching him giggle and play in the water. Now, as he turns 11 months old, we’re ready to introduce him to the wonders of a swimming pool.

Preparing for Andrew’s first swim involves careful planning to ensure it’s a safe and enjoyable experience. We started by choosing a pool with warm water, as babies can quickly get cold. Ideally, the water temperature should be between 85-87°F (29-31°C) to keep him comfortable.

We’ve also equipped ourselves with essential gear. Swim diapers are a must to prevent any accidents in the pool. Additionally, we’ve invested in a baby float with a secure seat to help Andrew stay afloat while allowing him the freedom to kick and splash. We also have a set of baby-friendly swim toys to keep him entertained.

Safety is our top priority, so we’ll be taking things slow. Our plan is to start with short sessions of about 10-15 minutes to let Andrew get accustomed to the new environment. We’ll hold him securely and make sure he feels supported and safe. To protect his sensitive skin, we’ll rinse him thoroughly with fresh water after swimming and apply a gentle moisturizer to keep his skin hydrated.

As a doula and a new mom, I recommend preparing thoroughly for your baby’s first swim. Choose the right environment, ensure you have the necessary gear, and prioritize your baby’s comfort and safety. Introducing them to swimming not only promises fun but also sets the foundation for a lifelong love of water activities.

We’re looking forward to this new adventure and can’t wait to see Andrew’s reaction to the pool. Stay tuned as we share more about our summer adventures and Andrew’s swimming progress!
